The Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFFM-PAS), was founded in 1956. Since that time it has been a place of fundamental research in the area of principles of operation, design, construction and developemnt of machinery for energy conversion in flows. Nowadays the main reseach is carried out in the following fields: fluid mechanics, multiphase flows, thermodynamics and heat transfer, plasma physics, laser technique, machine mechanics, tribology and diagnostics of power sector machinery.

The Institute of Fundametal Technological Research, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFTR-PAS) was established in 1953 on the basis of a few divisions in Department IV (Technical Sciences) of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The initial groups of scientists were dealing with mechanics of continuous media, electronics, theoretical electronics, vibrations and metals. Later, many other divisions were created for energy transformation, isotopes, astronautics and magnetics. In the following years, several divisions were transformed into independent units and left the IFTR-PAS.

The Portuguese Association of Theoretical, Applied and Computational Mechanics (APMTAC) was legally created in 1995 and it is affiliated to IACM, ECCOMAS and IUTAM. It has informally existed since 1972 as the Portuguese Commission for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, which has been affiliated to IUTAM since that date and it was coordinated by Prof. Eduardo Arantes e Oliveira.

The Polish Association of Computational Mechanics (PACM) was legally created in 1991, and it is affiliated to IACM, ECCOMAS and IUTAM. The PACM is the organiser of Polish Conferences on Computer Methods in Mechanics (CMM), which take place every two years. Since 2001 these Conferences have international character and also since that time Prof. Olgierd Zienkiewicz holds the Honorary Chair of International CMM Conferences. He is also the Honorary Member of PACM.
